BEIJING (Reuters) - Jailed Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo has asked his wife to travel to Norway to pick up his Nobel Peace Prize, she told Reuters on Tuesday.

"Xiaobo told me he hopes I can go to Norway to receive the prize for him," Liu Xia said by telephone from her house where she is under virtual house arrest.

"I think it will be very difficult," she added, when asked if she thought the government would allow her to go.

Liu Xia said the government had not yet explicitly told her she would not be allowed to go to Norway. The prize will be formally bestowed on Dec. 10 in Oslo.

China said on Tuesday that giving the Nobel Peace Prize to a jailed dissident showed a lack of respect for its legal system, in further criticism of an award that has stirred tensions over human rights.

watches Chinese Nobel laureate's wife detained

Chinese Nobel laureate's wife detained

Beijing: The wife of Chinese Nobel Peace Prize winner Liu Xiaobo said she is under house arrest at her home in Beijing and pleaded for help in broadcasting her plight.

"Brothers, I have returned home. On the eighth (October) they placed me under house arrest. I don't know when I will be able to see anyone," said a Sunday night posting on Liu Xia's Twitter account.

She said she had just returned from visiting her husband in a prison in northeastern China, where she informed Liu of his award, but that she was now being detained incommunicado.

"My mobile phone is broken and I cannot call or receive calls. I saw Xiaobo and told him on the ninth at the prison that he won the prize. I will let you know more later. Everyone, please help me tweet. Thanks," she said.

Liu Xiaobo, the first Chinese citizen to win the Nobel Peace Prize, is a 54-year-old writer who was imprisoned after authoring Charter 08, a manifesto signed by thousands seeking greater rights in the communist nation.

He is serving an 11-year jail sentence for subversion at Jinzhou prison in Liaoning province.

The US-based group Human Rights in China (HRIC) on Sunday quoted Liu Xia saying that her husband had dedicated the award to the "lost souls" who died in the violent suppression of mass protests at Tiananmen Square in 1989.

A former university professor, Liu Xiaobo, had been a key figure in the protests.

Authorities detained dozens of Liu's supporters in Beijing, Shanghai and other cities on Friday as they celebrated his award.

Woods and former wife break silence about their divorce

Watch Woods and former wife break silence about their divorce

LARA MARLOWE in Washington

TIGER WOODS and his former wife, Elin Nordegren, have broken their silence about their divorce, he in a press conference at a golf tournament in New Jersey, she in an exclusive interview with People magazine.

Ms Nordegren said she has been on an “emotional roller coaster” since the scandal broke last Thanksgiving Day weekend.

“I have been through the stages of disbelief and shock, to anger and ultimately grief over the loss of the family I so badly wanted for my children,” she said in excerpts from the interview released by People before the magazine reaches newsstands tomorrow.

In 19 hours of interviews over four days in Windermere, Florida, where she has rented a home, Nordegren said she had lost weight, could not sleep and her hair fell out due to the stress of the break- up of her six-year marriage to Woods. She said speculation that she attacked Woods with a golf club on the night of the car crash that made the scandal known was truly ridiculous.

The 30-year-old former au pair said she felt stupid as more and more of Woods’s infidelities were revealed. “How could I have not known anything? The word betrayal isn’t strong enough. I felt my whole world had fallen apart.”

At The Barclays in Paramus, New Jersey yesterday, where he practised for the FedEx Cup play- off yesterday, Woods bumped fists with fans and signed autographs. He stopped smiling, however, during a news conference where he again assumed responsibility for the break-up of his marriage.

“My actions certainly led us to this decision and I have made a lot of errors in my life and that is something I’m going to have to live with.”

Woods twice failed to answer when reporters asked whether he still loved his ex-wife.

“I wish her the best in everything. You know, it’s a sad time in our lives and we’re looking forward to [rebuilding] our lives and how we can help our kids the best way we possibly can. And that’s the most important thing.”

Woods now stands 112th on the FedEx Cup points list and must make a decent finish this week if he is to advance to the next stage in the championship.

He acknowledged that his game was affected by the break-up. “At times it was difficult [to focus]. Certainly you try and block it out as best you can and focus on a shot. But at times it certainly was, yes.”

Nordegren is reported to have received between $100 million and $750 million in the still-undisclosed divorce settlement, which became final on Monday.

“She is very unselfconscious about the fact that yes, she is going to be a very wealthy woman,” said Sandra Sobieraj Westfall, the journalist who interviewed Nordegren for People . “It will make it easier for her to get through this, because she can stay home with her children. She doesn’t have to go right out and get a job and she can travel, to take her children back to Sweden.”

Nordegren also said though that “money can’t buy happiness or put my family back together”.

She is studying for a university degree in psychology and says that despite her ex-husband’s infidelity, “I also feel stronger than I ever have. I have confidence in my beliefs, my decisions and myself.”

Tiger Woods, wife officially divorced

Watch Tiger Woods, wife officially divorced

LONDON: Divorced. Single dad. Golf game still to be determined. And so, after nine months of turmoil over his extramarital affairs, now begins the next chapter in the life and times of Tiger Woods. In a hearing that lasted no more than 10 minutes in a Florida judge's chambers, Woods and his Swedish-born wife officially divorced Monday.

"We are sad that our marriage is over and we wish each other the very best for the future," Woods and Elin Nordegren said in a joint statement released by their lawyers.

The divorce was granted shortly after 2 p.m. in Bay County Circuit Court in Panama City, Fla., about 375 miles from their Isleworth home outside Orlando, where Woods drove his SUV over a fire hydrant and into a tree on Thanksgiving night. That set off shocking revelations that sports' biggest star had been cheating on his wife through multiple affairs.

Woods' life and golf game have been in disarray ever since.

He and Nordegren were married Oct. 5, 2004, in Barbados and have a 3-year-old daughter, Sam, and an 18-month-old son, Charlie.

Terms of the divorce — such as how much it will cost Woods — were not disclosed. They said only that they will "share parenting" of their two children.

Nordegren, who for years tried to stay in the background, was captured on video by celebrity websites eating lunch or picking up her daughter from school.

"We love Elin, and we are so proud of the grace and strength she has shown during this difficult time," her father, Thomas Nordegren, a talk show host at national broadcaster Swedish Radio, told The Associated Press. "We know that she will come out of this even stronger and has a bright future in front of her."
